Day hike to San Pedro and along the Palos Verdes Peninsula

On Saturday May 12th Great Outdoors Los Angeles will host a day hike to visit two amazing parks/beaches in San Pedro and along the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

When: Saturday, May 12th from 11:00 AM to about 4:15 ish PM.

Where: White Point/Royal Palms County Beach
Western Avenue and Paseo del Mar
San Pedro, CA 90732
(Access via Western Avenue – Paseo del Mar does not go through to Gaffey Street),

and,

Abalone Cove, Palos Verdes Peninsula

Length: About 5 to 5 1/2 hours total. Lots to pack in, pretend you are on a Princess cruise docking at L.A. Harbor and this is a shore excursion!

Difficulty of hiking: Easy

What to Bring: Good hiking boots/shoes. Pack a lunch, snacks and bring plenty of water. Bring a hat/cap and sunscreen. Your cameras (even consider bringing the ones not on your phone).

Rain cancels but threat of rain does not.

Summary

Event starts: 10:45 AM – 11:00 : Meet on top of White Point Park near picnic tables within sight of the restrooms. (Western Avenue and Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro, CA 90732) 

Park in FREE gravel parking lot.

At 11:00 we will have about a half hour presentation by geologist and professor Joe Holliday. At about 11:30 we will hike down to Royal Palms Beach below and visit historic beach and tide pools. At about 12:45 we will hike back up to White Point and have lunch about 1:00 at the picnic tables. This is a "pack your own" lunch, drinks, snacks outing!

After we have eaten/snacked and enjoyed the White Point/Royal Palms beach excursion, we will head out around 1:45 to caravan along the beautiful Palos Verdes coast toward our next destination Abalone Cove Shoreline Park (a 5.3 mile drive). At Abalone Cove Shoreline Park parking is Not Free, carpooling is encouraged. Our excursion at Abalone Cove will be less than 2 hours and thus $6 for parking (after 2 hours parking fee is $12 per car).

At approximately 2:30 Joe Holliday will give us another geological presentation and guide us down to the beach cove which will include visiting the only sea caves in Los Angeles County.

Our outing will conclude by 4:00 – 4:15 to get us out of parking lot in less than 2 hours.
